First Baptism, 2 Feb 2012

Hello Family!

I hope you're all doing well. Because I love each and every one of you immensely. I love getting your letters and notes of encouragement. Yes yes! I am also glad to hear that you are doing well.

As for me, things are just grand. On Sunday we had the baptism of Yeung Jimuih. Her daughter is a member (next to her in the photo). And yes, one of the elders serving in her area is also from my MTC group. Yay! It was really just a happy experience for everyone. Seeing her smile afterwards (and popo's don't always smile) just was the highlight of it all. She is so happy to be on the path of salvation with her daughter. It's sweet.

So, in case I don't have time to tell you everything (and is there ever time?) I just want to tell you this week's miracles.

First, the elders in Tsing Yi were doing some street contacting on a wet, cold and tiring day, came across this girl in her twenties, talked with her, set up a time to meet with her again and introduced her to us, and we've started teaching her. When we taught her, we asked her why she was willing to talk with the elders. She told us that the first question they asked her was "do you believe this world has a designer?" She is a graphic designer. She said this word just caught her ear and she was willing to listen. She really does seem to want to know what this life is all about, and it's been amazing to teach her (her name is Yimahn). So, there you go, Heavenly Father will let you participate in miracles you don't even know are going on. The elders were so surprised to hear about this when we told them, (and very grateful of course). This missionary work is amazing.

Second miracle: In my Cantonese learning, I have been trying to learn more vocabulary, but I try not to waste too much time learning words that are too random and I won't use just yet. But a week ago, I came across the words for "opera" and "play" and decided to learn them for no reason at all. Well, this week we got a referral from a member (she's actually in America right now) of her really good friend. I'm not the most adept at making phone calls, but I gave her a call. At first, she really didn't want to have anything to do with us, especially since it's easy to start sounding like a salesperson on the phone. But I asked some questions to get to know her better. Turns out she is an actress. And I was totally able to ask her about the play she's preparing for right now. It's actually a play about Buddhist beliefs and let perfectly into a gospel discussion. She's not actually in our area, but she's interested in learning more. A miracle. I was so grateful for Heavenly Father's help in learning just what was needed. There are a lot of things I don't know how to say, or am afraid to try to say because I know I won't make sense, but I can tell you clearly that Heavenly Father is helping me learn this language. And using His way to learn is best. Because then you get to participate in miracles. I am extremely grateful for this experience.

On that note, I am starting to like Cantonese more and more, partly because I'm learning more about just having conversations with people more. I've actually made a small goal to just have at least one random conversation with someone I run into in the day, and it's really helped love these people even more, and to get over my fears (every missionary has them, but we needn't). Also to love this work. How blessed I am to get to devote all of my time to sharing this gospel! It's a blast!

Our other investigators are doing well. Penny (remember her?) is a pure blessing to teach. She will be baptized in Feb. and she already wants to be a missionary. Her English is really good, and she and I happen to have some similar personality traits and it has been so much fun to become her friend as well as to help her learn this gospel. Jasmine (another investigator) and Penny have become good friends, and Penny has been helping teach Jasmine. They're amazing. As is Vina, the investigator I mentioned before. She is so easy going and willing to learn. In fact, yesterday we gave her a baptism date and she was totally excited for it. These people are incredible, is all.

The only other news really is that yesterday we had 24 exchanges and I got to be companions with Sister B, who was actually companions with Sister W before. We had a grand time, learned a lot, talked oodles of English (which we only feel slightly guilty for), and taught 2 lessons and went finding. I learned a lot and it was a good experience all around. 24 exchanges are so definitely divinely inspired to come at the right time for us and our investigators.

Anyway, I really must be off, but I love you all a lot. Thank you for your support, and know that I treasure every letter.

I know that this gospel is true and will bring you so much joy! It's been bringing me lots of joy too.

Gaijuhk loulihk! (keep up the good work!)

Love you all!

Love,
Sister Nielsen
