Hello Dearest Family Dear!
I hope you're all doing well. It sounds like your summer is amazing.
As
for me the summer is mosquito-filled, hot, sweaty, and full of
miracles. Training is actually not that bad. Especially because my
companion is just ready to go. She is small, full of energy, and has an
endearing British accent. We are actually very much alike. In fact, on
the street we have had two different random people tell us that we look
alike. Funny, huh? It's great. Sister Lau is a very optimistic and
driven person, and I think we will have a nice busy transfer.
Speaking of that...today we got a summer missionary! So right now I
am basically training two companions! Summer missionaries are youth from
Hong Kong who get to assigned to follow a companionship for one to two
weeks. They follow all of the mission rules, but they live at home
still, going home every evening and coming back to be with us in the
day.
Our missionary is named Sister Lee, from Cheung Sha Wan, and she has
perfect English, too, having studied in Maryland. She is super excited
to get to serve with us (even brought her own bike for the week :) ) and
we're excited to have her too. Sister Lau is nervous to be leading
around this summer missionary, too, since she's only had a week to get
used to a mission, too. But she'll be fine. Really, she's so prepared,
as is Sister Lee.
Oh, by the way, we have a new mission president now. I forgot to
tell you! He just came in on Saturday, since President and Sister Chan
just barely finished their mission. We will miss Pres Chan lots. But
President Hawks is really amazing. He served in HK years ago but his
Cantonese is still pretty good. Also he's very strict. We are expecting
big things for our mission here. It's exciting. I met him today and he
is tall. Also very nice.
Well, here's a quick report from what's happened this week:
Miracles! Sister Lau is the type to really and truly talk with everyone
she can (and in HK that means constantly) and we've had a chance to
share our testimonies with so many people. Side note of interest: Sister
Lau's Cantonese is really good (bit of a British accent), but she
doesn't really know any gospel terms. And since that's all I know, we
can really help each other a lot. We also read at about the same level,
surprisingly enough. It's exciting.
Ah, but back to the miracles: Mimi. I need to tell you about Mimi.
She is Yuen Ting's friend (Yuen Ting is a member. Her brother is the one
on a mission in the Spokane WA mission. Just left). Anyway, Yuen Ting
introduced Mimi to us, and Mimi has just eaten up the lessons we've
taught so far (Plan of Salvation). We gave her a BOM and asked her to
read one chapter and she asked if she could read more. Then DID. Wow.
She has a baptismal date for July 29th, which is soon. It's so exciting.
She's so cute. I'll include a picture of her and Yuen Ting. Mimi's on
the left.
Another miracle: Sister Lau's good friend from University is doing
an internship here (also British Born Chinese, BBC), and is living in
Yuen Long! We met with her (her name's Lorena) and ended up teaching her
the Restoration. I really hope that she'll be willing to keep meeting
us and learning about the gospel. She is a bit skeptical still, but
we'll keep praying and teaching.
Lastly: our wards here continue to be amazing. They keep giving us
referrals. Last week we got 5 new investigators, all of whom were
referrals. Yeah. This means that in the past two weeks we've gotten 14
referrals, which is technically one per day, you know. Meaning to say,
the area is on fire. Just us missionaries finding people is never that
effective, but members, they are powerful. Remember that.
Well, that's the main news from this week. The work pushes on. So
far, training has been ok. I've noticed it has actually really just
pointed out my own weaknesses and inablities a lot more, which is
humbling, and therefore good. I think that training is really just a
chance to be trained yourself, to be honest. It's also exciting to have
someone with so much fire and so many ideas (though you do have to sort
through them carefully). I really think this transfer is going to be
amazing.
Well, I love you all so much. Oodles.
Thank you for your love, your support, your letter and packages and everything. I miss you and love you a lot.
Love,
Sister Nielsen
